Her Story

Q2 “Quixotic 2” (previous name: “Just in Time”) was designed by Angelo Lavranos (St. Francis 50, Knysa 50) and Alan Wright (legendary kiwi yacht designer). The two leveraged their strengths together and the result was gorgeous lines (rare for a catamaran!), impressive strength yet relatively lightweight, a good turn of speed and performance and practical liveability. She is faster than a production condo cat, stronger, lighter, and better looking. She is constantly complimented on her lines everywhere she goes. Well done gents.

She was built as hull number three of an attempted production run by Catamarans New Zealand. That means that most of her decks, cabin, hulls and interior was done in mold (Impact Fibreglass Tauranga). She has excellent molded in non skid on her decks and ample thickness in her gel coat for many years of cutting and polishing to come. She has vinylester outer skin hulls and polyester elsewhere with high density closed cell foam core hulls, decks and bulkheads (no worries about leaks or rot!). She has Kevlar in her bows in the main bow crash compartments and in front and the bottom of her keels (for when you take the beach for those free haul outs!). Carbon fiber reinforcements in high load areas around main chain plates and winches.

Adding to her safety are the separate watertight compartments. She has two forward sealed crash compartments in each hull. Continuing aft we have the main cabin with a 4,000lph bilge pump. Then the engine compartments under the aft queen beds with another 4,000lph bilge pump. Then all the way aft we have another separate compartment for the rudder with yet another dedicated bilge pump. Five separate compartments in each hull. Foam-filled keel with Kevlar armour. In short, you’ll sleep well offshore!

As it happens with many boatbuilders, they spent too much on building her and they went into receivership. The original owner had paid for the hull and decks but could have lost the boat to the lenders. So at the advice of his lawyer he took possession of the boat the night before the company passed into receivership. He named her “Just in Time”.

He then found a beautiful large kauri tree than had fallen on his farm years prior and they cut gorgeous planks from the heartwood. His brother in law was a skilled carpenter and he created the beautiful kauri joinery that is used extensively throughout the interior, creating a warm inviting atmosphere.

No expense was spared on the final fitout using only the highest quality equipment and rigging. Yanmar engines, Furuno instruments, Andersen winches, the list goes on.

First owner:

The family sailed between Fiji and New Zealand for seven seasons of cruising in the islands. Once being caught in a 65 knot low halfway to Fiji. Her stability and strength was proven during that storm with one crew recounting the story of standing in the galley looking through the safety glass windows at the towering seas all around. He was thoroughly impressed with how she handled that storm. After her offshore adventures the family enjoyed local New Zealand cruising while basing out of Gulf Harbour Marina in Auckland.

Current Owner:

The current owner has over 60,000 nautical miles of sailing experience and has owned six ocean going yachts. He has extensive catamaran building experience after salvaging and repairing a Simonis-designed Voyage 43 in Fiji and New Zealand.

When he bought Q2 he had spent the previous two years viewing and surveying catamarans all over Australia and New Zealand. He spent $16,000 walking away from catamarans that were not built strong enough for serious offshore cruising, or that were not built to the standard he was looking for. He then found Q2 in Gulf Harbour, Auckland and her build quality was so impressive he knew he had found the best built offshore catamaran in that size range, and bought her in 2021.

The years that followed (2022-2024) saw a significant refit with over $175,000 spent and that doesn’t include the owners time. He then sailed Q2 to Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and back to New Zealand. During that trip he found any small details he wanted to work out. He then made those final changes and upgrades the following season in New Zealand. The next season (2024) he set off for Tonga and Fiji. From Fiji he sailed Q2 singlehanded to Japan via Micronesia and Saipan, arriving in Japan without any significant issues or breakages.  Once in Japan he spent six months exploring the wonders of Japan with his family.

He cares about the boat and does not want to see her sit idly in a marina somewhere unattended. So he is marketing the boat while actively cruising and living aboard so all her systems are being used daily and she is well cared for. He wishes to sell the boat as a turn key bluewater cruiser ready to go anywhere in the world.

She will be sold with her extensive offshore cruising inventory, spares, gear and everything the new owner would need to set sail offshore immediately. He is also offering a thorough handover and even his time to teach the new owner the boat and her systems to ensure a smooth transition into your new catamaran ownership and cruising lifestyle.
